In Santa Monica, the Grant Elementary School Student Council, Parent Teacher Association, Booster Club and Community Service Learning Committee dedicated January to raising money for tsunami relief in Asia.
Approximately $3,000 was raised, with $1,100 raised by students.
All proceeds will be donated to UNICEF to help Asian children and their families.
The Community Service Learning Committee raised $1,400 from a winter resale Saturday, January 22nd.
Donations of children’s clothing, books, shoes, sports equipment and toys were resold with the help of student volunteers from Santa Monica High School.
“One family preparing to adopt a child from China completely outfitted their new daughter with clothes, books and toys,” said Colette Storms, a committee member.
The Grant Student Council collected funds from a recycling drive on Friday, January 28th, and by collecting coins over several days from each classroom and parents.
The school also raised money on “Grant Night” Wednesday, January 5th, and Sunday, January 9th, with The Slice and The Counter restaurants donating a portion of their proceeds to UNICEF.
When Grant families got hair salon services from The Shampoo Lounge or dry cleaning services from Eco-Coastal Cleaners in January, those businesses donated 20 percent of their proceeds to the fundraising drive.
“The Grant community of students, parents, teachers and administrators have put together a multifaceted response to help children in need,” said Alan Friedenberg, school principal.
